This is a list of some of my favorite equipment that I often recommend. It is not necessary to have a lot of equipment but some of these tools may be very helpful to you. Remember that some of this equipment requires training and would not be recommended for every situation.

Voila treat pouch
The best treat pouch I have ever owned! This silicone design is 100% waterproof allowing you to use dry or wet treats or even use it as a water bowl (and it’s easy to clean)! Say goodbye to grease stains on your clothing or ziploc bags! The closure system allows the pouch to stay open when in use and closed when not in use. Fantastic customer service and a quality product.

Wire crates
I recommend that every dog is trained to be comfortable in a crate. While both wire and hard sided crates break down to a smaller size, wire crates are the winner for compact size! With an included divider they are a great option to limit the size of the crate for a young puppy while allowing you to expand their area as they grow without having to purchase extra sizes.

Hard sided crates
Hard sided plastic kennels are helpful for traveling. These kennels make for easy cleanup in the car for puppies, help to contain dirt and hair in your vehicle, and contain your dog. For crash tested vehicle crates see below. If your dog prefers a greater sense of security, they can provide a more den-like area in your home as well. They are also essential if you plan to fly with your larger dog.

Metal pails
Metal pails are very helpful to keep your puppy or dog hydrated while in a crate. Simply clip the pail to the side of the crate with a sturdy carabiner or double ended bolt snap hook. This prevents the pail from spilling while allowing access to water. The stainless steel is easy to keep clean and is a good choice for teething puppies to learn that chewing the pail is ineffective. I generally use a 2 qt size but a variety of sizes are available.

Chew toys
It is essential to provide an appropriate way for your puppy to satisfy their need to chew. Benebone and Nylabone chews are great options. Purchase a variety of shapes and rotate which ones your dog has access to in order to keep them novel. Only give your dog the appropriate size and durability option suited to your dog’s age and weight. Discard if your dog wears the bone down to a small piece.

Kong toys
Kong toys are a fun way to keep your dog occupied and are helpful in crate training. Spread some 100% peanut butter inside or stuff with wet food or soaked kibble and freeze for a long lasting frozen popsicle treat. Be sure to get the appropriate size and style for your dog’s weight and chewing intensity. To preserve longevity do not leave in the sun for long periods of time and discard if cracks appear.

Educator electronic collars
I recommend Educator Collars Educator ET-300 Mini collar in cases where I believe an electronic collar is beneficial. This collar is equipped with a 1/2 mile range and provides the option to select a one or two dog model. With 100 levels of stimulation you can find just the right level for your dog. Please note that electronic collars can be used incorrectly and training on how to properly use these collars is very important.

E-collar comfort wings
For dogs with long hair or loose neck skin the Winged Ultra Comfort Pad for the Educator Electronic Collar is a must have. This adapter helps to improve contact as well as comfort for your dog. The Educator Collars ET-300 Mini collar comes with two sizes of contact points suitable for many dogs, however this adapter works to correct inconsistent contact creating better communication between you and your dog.

Herm Sprenger collars
I recommend genuine Herm Sprenger brand prong collars for situations that I believe a prong collar is necessary or helpful. This brand is carried by a variety of vendors and online stores and comes in different styles and finishes. Verify that you are purchasing the correct brand. These collars are often fitted and used incorrectly and proper training is required to use this tool effectively and fairly for your dog.

Chuckit balls
Did you know regular tennis balls can actually wear down your dog’s teeth over time due? Tennis balls can be much more abrasive than you might think and can contribute to significant visible teeth wear. Chuckit balls area great alternative! They come in a variety of sizes and you can also get them with a handle for dogs that like to tug.

Tiller tugs
Tiller Tugs offer a wide variety of firehose tug options for dogs that like to tug. These durable tugs come in many sizes, lengths, and softer and firmer versions so you can find just the right one for your dog. I recommend finding an event that Tiller Tugs will be present at to shop their fantastic selection. Look out for fun handle patterns as well!

Tug balls
These foam balls are a favorite among many tug loving dogs. Even though made of foam, they are very durable and allow you the option to use for both retrieves and tug. You can also find them more economically on Temu.com. These balls float and are great for water retrieves. Additionally they do not bounce so they are great for toy play in indoor spaces!

Pupsicle
This lovely enrichment tool gives you the opportunity to make and freeze your own fillings or purchase premade options. With a unique design that is both easy to clean (dishwasher safe) and to refill you can provide enrichment without wasting your time. Select the correct size for your pup or look for the power chewer version.

Nail Clippers
Keeping your dog’s nails short is important. Getting your dog or puppy comfortable with nail clippers is very useful whether you intend to use a groomer or trim them yourself. Clippers are helpful for long, overgrown nails where a large portion of nail needs to be removed and the quick is easily visible.

Nail dremel
Nail dremels are helpful for nails that need regular maintenance, overgrown nails (where the quick is close), finishing off and tidying nails after clippers, cases where frequent trims are required, and dogs that are especially sensitive to trims. Dremels are also great for owners that are less confident in their nail trimming skills.

Impact crates
Impact dog crates provide several options for dogs that are notorious escape artists, who have significant to extreme anxiety, or who are extra boisterous. Built to last, these tough crates will hold up to the toughest dogs. Available in a variety of options (including collapsible versions) these are the perfect crate to give you the peace of mind knowing your dog is safe and secure.

Cots
Cots are helpful to provide clarity to your dog when teaching place type behaviors, managing multiple dogs, or simply for comfort, cleanliness, or cooling. A wide variety of options are available. Choose a cot based on your dog’s needs and planned indoor or outdoor use. For a basic version consider Frisco’s cot. For a lightweight, sleek option consider K9 Ballistics or 4Legs4Pets. For the most indestructible cot choose a vinyl bed from Kuranda beds.

Car crates
These car crates from TransK9 USA are incredible quality, crash tested crates shipped from Scotland and designed to fit your specific vehicle specifications. Available in single or double versions with a removable divider, these crates are also equipped with a secondary rear seat escape hatch in the event that your rear tailgate is disabled. This company also provides additional vehicle storage options for gear.
